Common Terminology Related to Instrumentation

Current Loop

A current loop is used when a device must be monitored or controlled remotely over a pair of conductors. In industrial process control, analogue 4–20 mA and 10–50 mA current loops are commonly used for signalling. In a 4–20 mA loop, 4 mA typically represents the lower end of the range and 20 mA represents the upper end.

Calibrate

To calibrate means to determine, by measurement or comparison with a standard, the correct value of each scale reading on a meter or other device.

Configure

To configure means to set up a program, device, or computer system for a particular application.

DCS: Distributed Control System

A distributed control system divides a plant or process into several areas of responsibility. Each area is managed by its own controller or processor, while the whole system is interconnected through communication buses or networks.

Fieldbus

Fieldbus is a digital, two-way, multi-drop communication link among intelligent measurement and control devices. It acts as a local area network for advanced process control, remote input/output, and high-speed factory automation applications.

HART

HART stands for Highway Addressable Remote Terminal. It provides digital communication for microprocessor-based smart analogue process control instruments.

Profibus

Profibus is an industrial communication protocol used for automation and process control applications.

Control Variable

A control variable is a measured variable that can be manipulated by the control system. Common examples include flow, level, pressure, and temperature.

Frequency

Frequency is the number of cycles completed by a periodic quantity within a unit of time.

Input / Output

Input/output, often abbreviated as I/O, refers to the equipment and activity that transfers information into or out of a computer or control system.

Instrumentation

Instrumentation refers to a collection of instruments, or the application of instruments, for observation, measurement, monitoring, or control.

Range

Range is the region between the limits within which a quantity is measured, received, or transmitted. It is usually expressed by stating the lower and upper range values.

Strain Gauge

A strain gauge is a device that uses the change in electrical resistance of a wire under strain to measure applied force.

SCADA

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is a control package used to monitor and control remote processes. SCADA systems may include hardware such as modems, telemetry equipment, servers, and control systems.

Temperature Bath

A temperature bath is a volume of substance held at a constant temperature so that an object placed in thermal contact with it is maintained at the same temperature.

Thermocouple

A thermocouple is a device that converts heat energy into electrical energy.

Transducer

A transducer is an element or device that receives energy in one form and converts it into another form.

Transmitter

A transmitter is a transducer that responds to a measured variable through a sensing element and converts that measurement into a standardized transmission signal proportional to the measured variable.

Tuning

Tuning is the adjustment of parameters to optimize a particular process.

UPS: Uninterruptible Power Supply

An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, is used to keep critical equipment running during a power failure. This can include computers, control systems, and other essential equipment.

VFD / VSD

A variable frequency drive, or VFD, is electronic equipment that allows an electric motor to run at varying speeds. A VSD, or variable speed drive, is a related term used for equipment that controls motor speed.
